Senior Wellness

Old dogWhen you hear the term “golden years”, it can bring many thoughts to mind:  retirement, aging gracefully, aches & pains, the “good old days”, age related health conditions, and senior citizen discounts!  With the aging process, our health care needs often change and it is no different for our “senior” pets.  There are a variety of conditions and diseases to be aware of as our pets approach their “golden years”.  These conditions can include:  hormone disorders (thyroid & diabetes), weight/mobility changes, organ diseases (heart, kidney & liver), cancer, and osteoarthritis.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), most pets reach adulthood by the age of 2 and middle age by 4.  Large breed dogs are considered seniors by the age of five and smaller breeds seven years of age.  Cats typically live longer than dogs and are seniors at the age of 7-10.  Senior pets represent 39% of the pet population.  With that being said, helping them through early intervention will let them to live longer, happier lives.
