The North Laurel Animal Hospital is a proud sponsor of the Maryland SPCA. Contrary to what some may think given the name, the Maryland SPCA has no ties with the ASPCA. They simply share part of a name.

The MDSPCA began in 1869, primarily as an equine rescue facility, and actually still uses the same land and buildings that it used in its inception over a century ago. They are a non-profit organization and do not receive any funding from the government or any other organization. All funds are raised through the sale of animals (reasonably priced from $100 to $125), fundraisers and donations. The MDSPCA pledges never to euthanize an animal due to an extended stay at their facility and that is a large reason why we decided to affiliate with this fine facility. The average adoption time for when an animal enters the facility to when they leave is only three days for dogs and eight days for cats.

Over 3000 pets are adopted out each year. Dogs are housed in spacious runs with padded beds and are taken outside daily to run around and be socialized in a fenced in environment. Before a dog can be surrendered to the MDSPCA, they must pass a strict behavioral assessment to make sure they do not display cage aggression, dog aggression, shyness or pose any dangers to dogs or the humans who may adopt them. Cats are housed in spacious stacked cages which have multiple levels and multiple “rooms” for the cats to run in and out of.

Additionally, the MDSPCA has an onsite clinic to spay/neuter pets and even provides low cost or free spay/neuter clinics to those who qualify or participate in special rescue/population control programs. They even go around to inner city Baltimore shelters and take in pets who are marked for euthanization.

The MDSPCA is a truly great organization. If you are ever in the market for a new pet, give the MDSCPA a chance and reward a pet with great home. Also, if you ever need to surrender an animal for any reason, they are the place to go. For more information on donations and the MDSPCA, please visit the MDSPCA website.

Fidos for Freedom

Fidos for Freedom logoThe North Laurel Animal Hospital has been engaged in a partnership with Fidos For Freedom for over 15 years.  Fidos is a group dedicated to training and providing service dogs to people who are physically and mentally challenged, hard of hearing or deaf, as well as providing continuing training and support to those people and their dogs.  Fidos also trains therapy dogs to work with patients residing in healthcare facilities, providing physical benefit as well as uplifting the spirits of the people these dogs are helping.  We find their efforts within their own walls and within the community commendable and are proud to be affiliated with such a fine organization.

In addition to their extensive work with those afflicted with life altering conditions, Fidos does a variety of presentations within the community to educate and inform on a variety of different canine issues, service issues as well as the reason Fidos is dedicated to training dogs for service.

Lastly, Fidos serves as an important community service opportunity for high school students looking to fulfill their service hours prior to graduation as well as spearheading a mentoring program for elementary students to learn to read alongside Fidos therapy dogs in a relaxed environment.

Fidos is a not for profit organization based in Laurel, MD and they are always accepting tax deductable donations.  If you should feel compelled to do so, donations can be sent to:
